Guest-friendly trash and recycling instructions that reduce mistakes

Clear, property-specific directions help renters use the right bins without turning your house rules into a manual.

Guests want to do the right thing, but unfamiliar bin colors, local rules, and hidden storage areas make mistakes easy. The best instructions are brief, visible, and specific to the property rather than copied from a generic hosting checklist.

Show, do not just tell

Use the same labels in the kitchen, garage, and digital guidebook. A simple photo of the property's containers can be more useful than a paragraph describing where they sit behind a gate.

If a bin number or color identifies the home, include that detail so guests do not use a neighbor's container.

Keep checkout expectations reasonable

Ask guests to tie bags and place them in the correct exterior bin. Avoid requiring them to learn collection timing, move several heavy containers, or return bins after they have already checked out.

  • State what belongs in recycling using plain examples.
  • Tell guests not to leave bags on the ground.
  • Explain where pet waste and food waste should go.
  • Provide a number for questions or unusually large items.

Separate guest duties from property operations

Guests can dispose of everyday waste, while the owner, manager, or valet service remains responsible for collection-day logistics. This division creates simpler house rules and a more reliable exterior routine without adding another checkout chore that could affect the guest experience.
